As a company director or fleet trainer, you may be looking at how you can save money, aren’t we all?! But, having a fleet of vehicles is not cheap. The good news is that by implementing a few small changes, fleet training can save you money.

The Importance of Compliance and Risk Awareness for Fleet Managers

van driver training Driving is one of the most dangerous work activities that majority of us do. It’s up there with other jobs such as deep-sea fishing and firefighting. 519 people are killed every week while using the road for work purposes. Whether you are a transport fleet manager, a safety professional or a company owner, driver safety is something that you can’t afford to ignore.

Just think of this for a moment, how would your business cope with a fatality among your drivers?

What if one of your drivers or you were seriously injured or killed someone else, even if only by mistake?

That is someone’s son, daughter, mum, dad, auntie, uncle…

It’s horrible to think about, and we find it easy to separate ourselves and think ‘this won’t happen to me’. But you never know what path life has in store for you.

The Risks of Fleet Driving

The reality is, 1 in 3 accidents in the UK involves someone who is driving for work. Year ending Sept 2017 there were 27,010 people killed or seriously injured while driving. Just in one year!

Since the introduction of The Corporate Manslaughter & Homicide Act 2007, it is easier for a company to be prosecuted in the event of a death of an employee or a death caused by an employee. If found guilty, companies are issued a significant fine (which is unlimited). Directors can be held personally liable – worst case, directors could find themselves facing a prison sentence.

In HSE’s guidelines ‘Driving for Work’, it states that “health and safety law applies to on the road work activities as to all work activities, and the risks should be effectively managed within a health and safety system”. Employers must assess the risks involved in their employees’ use of the road while at work. They must also ensure they take reasonable steps to manage those risks. Merely passing responsibility onto the driver is not an option, if the worst happens and you have passed on the responsibility to the driver, you will be found out.

Is that a risk you are willing to take?

How to Manage Fleet Driver Risk?

Looking at the statistics, you might be worried that being a fleet manager is hard work. However, with proper risk assessment, driver training, and education, you can prevent accidents.

Parry’s Fleet Services can help you and or your company by delivering Fleet Training, which can help reduce the risk.

So, I have some questions for you…

  • Does your company have a fleet of cars or vans?
  • Are your drivers using the vehicles efficiently?
  • Would you like to save money? (Yes please!)

How to Cut Fleet Management Costs?

Would you like to protect yourself and your business against the ever-changing laws surrounding fleet management? The good news is that you can stay compliant, protect your business, and save money at the same time.

By training your fleet drivers and grey fleet drivers, you can expect the average driver to be able to use between 10-30% less fuel just by changing a couple of simple aspects of their driving. But they must also embrace the change and carry it on after the training. There is little point if they change for the assessment and training, then revert to old ways afterwards.

Imagine the difference a minimum of a 10% saving on your fleet running costs could make to your

business. Take into account fuel and insurance, but it does not stop there. These changes also lead to consumable items, such as brakes and tyres lasting considerably longer, so your repair costs will drop, too.

How Much Fleet Training Can Save You?

Your drivers taking more care over their driving can have long terms effects too. Resale values/off hiring costs can also be positively affected by the driver taking more care. Not to mention your company image. Your drivers are the face of your company on the roads!

Just think, a saving of just 15% on one person’s fuel bill per year is on average £1200 saving per person. What could you do with an extra £1200 a year?  If you have 10 drivers saving that much per year, that is a saving of £12,000 per year on fuel alone.

Ask yourself if you are doing enough to protect yourselves and your drivers?
