A POLICE officer who stopped a car which failed to give way at a roundabout could smell cannabis when he opened the door. He was clearly driving under the influence of drugs.

Who Is Responsible for Delivery Drivers’ Alcohol or Drug Related Traffic Offences?

Could this be a driver who was working for you?

Drug driving is a serious traffic offence fleet managers should be aware of. To protect the company’s reputation, the public, and the driver, fleet driving policies need to be put in place.

Read the news about the delivery driver below.

Do You Carry Out Regular or Random Drink and Drug Tests with Your Staff?

The magistrate at Blackburn Magistrates Court was told that the officer found a small quantity of the drug in the car and the driver tested positive. Was this one of your company owned fleet vehicles or was it the employees own vehicle, (Grey Fleet) we will not know. But ask yourself. Do you want your staff using drugs or drinking whilst driving for work? What can you do to help them?

The driver who I will not name in this blog was local to Blackburn and pleaded guilty to possessing cannabis and drug driving. He received a ban from driving for three years and fined £297 in total and this was after the court was told he had a previous drink driving conviction.

Driving under the influence of drugs is a great risk for companies and the public. Prevention is the company’s responsibility.

Drug Driving: A Risk for Fleet Managers

This delivery driver was at a level of cannabis of 16, against the legal limit of 2.

This not only could have ended with a ban from driving for this delivery driver, he would have lost his job. That would have had an affect on his family.

How To Prevent Driving Under the Influence of Drugs

The business also now has to replace this role at a cost to the company. A cost that could of been avoided if the business owners had of been proactive in the detection of drink and drug use within the business. It is the fleet manager’s responsibility to create robust policies and procedures, random testing and offer help for any employee who was using substances. There is help for your staff.

A fleet policy should include sections about driving under influence.
