Are you just Coasting Along?

In this month’s blog I would like to cover a short blog on coasting.

Coasting: What Is it? If you know what it is, what are your views on it? Is it bad? Does it waste fuel?

Essentially, coasting when the wheels, depends on the type of vehicle you’re driving, car, van, bus or truck, are not engaged with the engine, even though the vehicle is moving forward. This happens when, either the clutch pedal is held down, or the gear lever is in the neutral position.Could this be bad for the car? Not many people know that coasting significantly increases the load weight of the car and with that, applies more pressure on your brakes as your car is not using the engine or gear changes to assist in slowing down. The more braking is required, the faster your brake pads and discs will wear away and then need replacing.

The Big Question We Should Be Asking Is: Is Coasting Illegal?

Guidance from text books and instructors to drivers of any vehicle would be to not coast when you are going down a gradient. Whilst coming up to red traffic lights come off the gas early, use engine braking and brakes to slow down, when the car has slowed down with the assistance of the engine you can then finish the rest of the approach using the brakes. But whatever you do, don’t leave the car in neutral on approach.

If you are thinking that this is something you do often, then try and be more aware when you are driving and slowly change this habit, so that over time you don’t coast in your car. I would love to hear your views! Get in touch anytime or comment on this blog below.
